365 days, from 126,000 to 82,000: What exactly did the crypto market "lose" this year? One year ago that night, 1.6 million positions were wiped out within 24 hours. Today BTC is still struggling around $83,000. But the truly frightening thing isn’t the price—it’s what’s gone and will never come back. 1/ Let’s go back to that night. On October 6, 2025, BTC just hit a new all-time high of $126,080. Four days later, Trump announced a 100% tariff on Chinese goods. Within 24 hours, $19.16 billion in leveraged positions were liquidated, affecting over 1.6 million traders. Hyperliquid alone liquidated $10.3 billion. That night, many thought it was "just another crash." Looking back, it was the end of an era. Ironically, that 100% tariff never actually took effect. After the China-US summit in Busan at the end of October last year, consensus was reached, and in February this year the Supreme Court ruled the president had no authority to impose tariffs under IEEPA. The trigger was fake. But what blew up was all real money. 2/ Price: Looks "mild" but actually stings. BTC fell from $126,080 to $58,500 in June, a maximum drawdown of 54%. Now around $83,000, still down 34% from the peak. Compared to history: in past bear markets BTC usually dropped over 75% from peak to trough. This time it "only" dropped 54%, which seems mild. But mild doesn’t mean safe. Crypto total market cap dropped from $4.29 trillion to $2.88 trillion. Altcoins fared worse—their market cap fell from $1.86 trillion to $1.23 trillion, shrinking about 40% after excluding stablecoins. BTC only dropped one-third, your altcoins dropped 40%. The word "mild" is a joke to most. 3/ Institutions: This is the core change. BTC ETF cumulative net inflows dropped from $62.77 billion to $57.08 billion, a net outflow of $5.7 billion in one year. Assets under management fell from $158.97 billion to $105.22 billion, shrinking about one-third. November and December 2025 saw a combined net outflow of $4.57 billion, the largest two-month outflow since ETF listings. The first half of 2026 had a net outflow of $5.4 billion, the first half-year net outflow ever. ETH ETFs did worse: assets dropped from $32 billion to $15.7 billion, nearly halving. ETF funds are retreating. Not because institutions are bearish on crypto—but because a 5% risk-free rate is more attractive. The money hasn’t disappeared, it just found a more comfortable place. 4/ Leverage: It hasn’t disappeared, just moved. The total open interest of perpetual contracts in the market dropped from a peak of $210 billion on October 7, 2025, to $99.1 billion in April 2026, nearly halving. But the structure has completely changed— The share of perpetual contract open interest on DEXs rose from less than 4% to 13.5%, with Hyperliquid alone accounting for 56.8% of DEX volume. Trading targets are no longer just crypto. Perpetual contracts for gold and semiconductor ETFs have entered the top ten by volume. RWA perpetual contracts reached about $147.5 billion in monthly volume in July, nearly 20% of on-chain perpetual contract volume. Leverage isn’t dead. It just moved from CEXs to on-chain, from crypto to traditional assets. 5/ New species: Old players exit, new players rise. BitMEX, the inventor of perpetual contracts, operated for 11 years and once held 57% of global crypto derivatives market share—officially shut down on September 23. BME X token dropped over 94% in one day, down nearly 99.8% from its all-time high. AscendEX and BitMart also ceased operations. In the first seven months of this year, over 60 crypto companies and projects closed or went bankrupt. But on the other side: Prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket combined monthly volume soared from $8.5 billion to $72.3 billion, nearly a tenfold increase in one year. First half of this year’s volume reached $187 billion, 2.7 times last year’s total. Binance bStocks tokenized stocks launched less than four months ago and surpassed $800 million in scale. The tokenized stock category’s total market cap exceeded $3 billion. Generation Z contributed 44% of trading volume, and 41.5% of users accessed traditional financial investments for the first time through bStocks. On-chain US Treasury market size exceeded $16.2 billion, up 77% since the start of the year. One side is a coffin, the other a cradle. 6/ What exactly was lost this year? $5.7 billion in institutional funds. Half the market’s leverage. Old players like BitMEX. 40% of altcoin market cap. But more importantly— The old paradigm of "retail leveraged bull market" is gone. The old playbook of "100x all-in on altcoins, waiting for institutions to take over" died this cycle. What remains and rises are ETFs, on-chain derivatives, prediction markets, tokenized assets—all institutional-grade tools. 7/ Conclusion 1011 is not the end. It’s the starting point of the crypto market’s transformation from "retail leveraged bull market" to a new paradigm of "institutions + on-chain + multi-asset." Old whales exit, new whales enter. This is not a bear market, it’s a change of guard. If you’re still playing this round with last round’s script—losing money really can’t be blamed on others. $BTC $ETH $XAU
