How to Choose the Right Trading Bot for Your Strategy

Trading bots can help automate how orders are placed, but they are not one-size-fits-all. The best starting point is not the bot with the most features. It is the one whose trading behavior matches your goal and the market conditions you expect.

Start with your objective

Ask yourself what you want the bot to do:

If your goal is to...

Exchange Mode

Simple Mode or Exchange Mode?

Simple Mode includes Recurring Buy, Spot DCA, and Spot Grid, which makes it a good place to start. Exchange Mode includes the same bots with customizable parameters, plus Smart Portfolio, TWAP, and Iceberg. If you want more control over how a bot behaves, Exchange Mode is the better fit.

Recurring Buy: build a position over time

Recurring Buy is for users who want to build a position gradually. You choose an amount and a schedule, and the bot makes purchases automatically instead of you placing each order manually. Because purchases are spread over time, you are not relying on a single entry price.

Recurring Buy does not guarantee a better entry price or protect a position from losses. If price falls after you buy, the value of your holdings can fall too. Review the amount, schedule, and funding asset before you start.

Spot DCA: buy dips and take profit

The Spot DCA bot buys more as price falls, sells if price bounces back, then starts a new cycle automatically. It may suit someone who wants to automate a buy-the-dip approach rather than place each order manually.

Spot DCA does not guarantee a better entry price or a profit. Because it buys more as price falls, your exposure grows in a prolonged downtrend, and if price doesn’t recover, the position may stay open at a loss. Review the allocation and conditions before launching.

Spot Grid: trade within a range

Spot Grid is for a market that you believe may move up and down within a defined range. You choose the upper and lower boundaries, and the bot places orders between them. If price moves outside the range, the bot may not place new grid orders until price returns to it.

Before using a Grid bot, consider whether you can explain why the range makes sense for your own strategy. A range that is too narrow can be left quickly; a very wide range can spread activity across prices you did not intend to target. If price falls below your range, you may be left holding the asset.

Smart Portfolio: keep a target mix

Smart Portfolio is for users who want to hold several assets in set proportions. You choose how much of each asset you want in your portfolio. As prices change and your holdings drift away from those percentages, the bot automatically buys and sells to bring them back into balance.

It may suit someone who wants to keep a portfolio mix without checking and adjusting it manually. Rebalancing is not a way to beat the market. It can sell assets that keep rising, so in a strong uptrend it may do worse than simply holding. It also does not protect you if the assets in your portfolio fall in value. Review your target allocation before launching.

TWAP and Iceberg: execute larger orders with more control

These execution tools are for users who want more control over how a larger order reaches the market. TWAP divides the order over time. Iceberg limits the amount of the order visible at one time.

They are generally most useful when the mechanics of executing an order matter as much as the decision to place it. Understand each parameter before use.

A simple decision checklist

Before choosing a bot, make sure you can answer:

  1. What is my objective: building a position, buying dips and taking profit, range trading, keeping a target portfolio mix, or order execution?

  2. Which trading pair or pairs and funding asset will I use?

  3. How much am I comfortable allocating?

  4. What settings will cause the bot to trade, pause, or stop?

  5. How often will I review the strategy?

Bots automate execution, not market outcomes. Digital asset prices can be volatile, and a bot can incur losses just as a manually managed strategy can, including in falling markets.

Trading bots involve risk. Automated strategies do not guarantee profits or eliminate the risk of losses. OKX Inc. is a FinCEN-registered money services business.
